European Network Remembrance and Solidarity in cooperation with House of the Wannsee Conference would like to invite you for three days of methodological workshops for teachers.
Those seminars are part of “Sound in the Silence” project – an intercultural and international remembrance project for youth. At historically challenging locations students work with artists representing different artistic fields in order to understand how the past is connected to their questions in the present. By doing so, we give young people a chance to find new ways of looking at the history of Europe, of our nations, states, regions, and to work out their own perception of reality and tools for expressing it.
For three days teachers will have two blocks of workshops. The first part will be focused on educational materials. During the workshop teachers will learn about the free educational resources available on the Hi-story Lessons platform, including infographics, lesson plans and animations, among others the educational kit about disinformation and memory conflicts. Participants will consider how to use the resources in their teaching work. The teachers will also learn about the interactive infographic within the project “Statistics and Catastrophe. Questioning Eichmann’s Numbers” held by the GHWK and ENRS. We will discuss methods and activities which might be useful to address the history of the Wannsee conference within the classroom.
The second block will focus on alternative, in particular aesthetic-research and artistic approaches to the Holocaust – and the House of the Wannsee Conference. The participants first get to know very different graphic novels in excerpts and receive suggestions for use in the classroom, and at the same time they will benefit from an exchange in a multinational group of teachers. One focus is on the graphic novel „Wannsee“ by Fabrice de Henanff, but the Will Eisner-nominated anthology „But I live“ will also be presented.
This is followed by interactive and hands-on activities dealing with the location and its abstract history, both alone and/or in teams. With the help of a variety of impulses (creative writing, collage, photography, designing own short comic sequences), the participants are offered a setting of methods from which they can choose what appeals to them – and what they can use themselves for teaching in class. Older an newer artistic approaches (from painting to conceptual artwork etc.) on the subject of the Holocaust, guilt, commemoration and remembrance will also be presented and discussed in a final session.
Rules for participation:
